This was a project where Muniz was invited to spend time at the Frick House - a turn of the centuty home which was frozen in time ever since the death of the young daughter of the original owners. Vik lived and worked as if he was living one hundred years ago. He photographed with a large antique camera and the ambrotype process that these were printed in is also over one hundred years old.

' 2000, Muniz has gone looking in the folds of history for the uncanny doublings that have become his signature. He has created--or rather, re-created--a series of sixty-five black-and-white. Photographs from Clayton, Henry Clay Frick's Pittsburgh estate, now a museum that preserves the nineteenth-century Industrialist's home as it existed when robber barons roamed the earth. The idea for the series came to Muniz when he discovered that archival photographs had been used to restore the house to its original state. Some of his images are photographs of these vintage prints; others feature the museum's tour guides reenacting scenes from the home's past.

While at the Frick, Mr. Muniz became fascinated by the concepts, histories, and collections contained in and around Clayton.

Elaborately staged still lifes and genre scenes -- constitute Mr. Muniz's carefully constructed, personal vision of how life might have been in the twenty-three rooms and on the grounds of the Victorian-era house. Muniz became particularly interested in the many histories told about Clayton and the family that lived there.

As one of the most compelling and controversial industrialists at the turn of the twentieth century, Henry Clay Frick has been the object of historical scrutiny and interpretation for 100 years. The story of his family's life at Clayton, where the Fricks and their children lived from 1882 until 1905, when they moved to New York City, is retold daily by docents leading public tours through the home. Ive taken the tour of Clayton with different guides, and every one tells a unique story. Although they all have the same text, they emphasize different parts.

Once history enters the realm of human interpretationit is inadvertently analyzed and changed. Many of Clayton's most compelling stories center around the Fricks' family life and their children, Childs (18831965), Martha (18851891), Helen (18881984), and Henry Clay Frick, Jr. Muniz felt most vividly at Clayton. He decided that, in the absence of photographs documenting a child's point of view in the nineteenth century, he would take on the task of exploring such a perspective, along with its psychological and visual complications. To create his work for the Frick, Mr.

Muniz used period equipment, including a nineteenth-century lens and camera. He shot the photographs from the low perspective of a four- or five-year-old child and used as his models contemporary children and adults, dressed in period clothing and posed in sometimes elaborately staged scenes recreating the artist's vision of life at Clayton: for example, a festive croquet party, two girls helping each other dress, or a seated servant peeling potatoes.

Even people who were involved in the shoots, but not actually in the pictures, dressed in costumes of the era. The photographs have many qualities of straightforward Victorian pictorial prints, yet at the same time they are lyrical and haunting as they explore the innocence of children travelling through an adult world. An ambrotype is a rare nineteenth century photographic process whereby the image is printed on glass.

It looks opaque until viewed against a black background. The Muniz piece is backed by black velvet. Peanut butter and jam, chocolate, sugar, wire, dirt and diamonds are just a few of the astonishing range of materials used by artist Vik Muñiz in the images he produces and then photographs. Since the mid-1990s, Brazilian artist Vik Muñiz has earned an international reputation for the photographic pieces he creates out of everyday materials. These images, inspired by current events, art history or famous figures, are familiar yet enigmatic.

Initially taking the form of witty visual statements, his works question the way visual information is constructed, presented and then perceived by the viewer. Since 1989, Muñiz has exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions in highly prestigious institutions in New York, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Houston, Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Madrid and Dublin. He took part in the 24th Bienal de São Paulo in 1998, and represented Brazil at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. He now divides his time between Rio de Janeiro and New York. Muñiz " illusions " have won over critics and public alike.

Time Magazine rated the artist as one of the Leaders of the New Millennium and The New York Times recommended his work as a sure-fire antidepressant, describing it as an idea wrapped up in surprise and laughter! 2018' Vik Muniz: Handmade', Xippas Gallery, Paris, France' Vik Muniz: Photography and the Rebirth of Wonder', Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA' Vik Muniz: Verso', Belvedere Museum, Vienna, Austria' Vik Muniz', Dirimart Dolapdere, Istanbul, Turkey.
