The offered Ty Cobb signed check was written on August 14, 1946, to "Mills the Florist" in Palo Alto, California. Mills was an institution even then, having opened near the turn of the century, as it is today.
Cobb's home was in nearby Atherton, California. Cobb was on the road at the time, having just coached the West All-Stars on August 10 in the Esquires All-American Boys Baseball Game. Honus Wagner was the coach of the East All-Stars in that's year's game, which was moved from New York to Chicago and was played at Wrigley Field. The game brought together 33 boys, aged 16-18, sponsored by 32 US newspapers.
The players represented 25 states. He would visit Detroit and Cleveland during that trip. The check is framed with two modern prints of photos (postcards) of Cobb, one of which is the famous Charles Conlon "Cobb Sliding" image.
The check measures 8 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches, is framed to a size of 14 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches and presents with expected wear from bank cancellations. Signature grades an 8-9, minimally. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentic.
