ORIGINAL CHARLES SAWYER'PLEASANT STREET NANTUCKET' HAND COLORED PHOTOGRAPH. This is a great piece. Living in New England I see quite a few original hand colored photographs by Wallace Nutting, David Davidson, and Charles Sawyer. These three were the masters of this art form with Nutting working in Massachusetts, Sawyer in New Hampshire, and Davidson in Rhode Island. Obviously they all traveled and did work throughout New England and some of them even did work in Western United States and Europe. The market has been flooded with all the common ones over the last decade or so but the truly scarce ones have seem to be harder and harder to find. This is one of those examples. In fact, I think this can be considered one of the most rare of all the works by any of the 3 artists. Titled on the back, this is from what I can find, one of only 3 known to exist. There are 2 examples that came to market at Michael Ivankovich auctions back in 2005. The first one was described as the first Nantucket Sawyer they had ever seen and the second described as the second. For them to have never seen them, is quite rare as they are the most knowledgeable collectors and dealers in this area of art. Those were the same size as this one measuring 10 x 13 inches. Signed in white lower right corner. It is a closed frame hand colored with the original coloring being still quite strong. Pretty much as created condition. Frame shows some minor nicks and paint loss but nothing too bad. Original dust paper on the back has the "The Sawyer Pictures Concord NH" stamp as well as the title written in pen. Just an outstanding incredibly scarce example of this Nantucket photograph. Frame measures 11 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches.
