He was the official photographer of the Zigfield Follies and was sometimes known as "the maker of stars, " with aspiring actresses, dancers, etc paying hefty sums even in the Depression for a career-changing sitting with this photographer. His work included more than the Follies girls however and this is one of the earliest examples. Inscribed 1907 on the back in presumably the artist's writing.
Dalton was one of his earliest subjects in this genre. She was reportedly one of the first starlets to work in talkie films, in fact I was told she was the actual first - though I'm not certain of this. PHOTO: This is also a stunning example of ACJ's work because.
Original print (large for the era) in great condition tipped on to original signed mat as issued by the artist more than 100 years ago. I believe this is a silver gelatin photo - though I'm willing to hear a correction from more knowledgeable photo collectors. This mat has predicted age patina (very very light) and 3 really short and very light lines in margin beyond top of actual photo. I do not have paperwork substantiating this and wish I had asked for it at the time. Still, there's no arguing with an original signature and vintage mount paper.
The pitch black background reminds me of the Fade-Away illustrations of another artist of the period, here creating a feeling that the subject floats without distraction. FRAME: Photo was framed by reputable framer of quality pieces utilizing acid free materials and UV glass. Frame incorporates double moulding (each a different profile thyough both black lacquer) assembled so as to create width and depth. Intense black is complimentary of the black background chosen by ACJ. Frame is is stunning, problem-free, shiny condition.Photo is 10 1/8" x 13 1/8". Exposed area within the frame which includes background mat is approx 15 1/8" x 19 3/8". Double frame moulding is 2.25 wide. Entire piece is 19 5/8" x 23 7/8".
