ANSEL ADAMS MOONRISE FROM GLACIER POINT YOSEMITE SPECIAL ED Gelatin Silver

A GARAGE FIND THAT TURNED INTO A TREASURE! For your consideration is this framed Ansel Adams Print entitled "Moonrise from Glacier Point" that I found at an estate sale. The image captures the moon rising over the Clark Range southeast of Glacier Point.

On the back is the stamp that states. From Ansel Adams' original negative. The interesting thing about this stamp on the back, is it is initialed personally by Alan Ross. Ross and he verified that it is his initials. Well, congratulations on your find!

Ansel swapped that particular Moonrise, Glacier Point out for a different take on the scene sometime in 1978! So you DO have a collectors item! Since that image is no longer part of the Special Edition offering, and it was made under Ansels supervision I always took sample prints in to him for approval/suggested changes before I went into production mode. Alan Ross is an internationally respected master photographer and educator who worked side-by-side with Ansel Adams as his photographic assistant.

He knows Adams approach and technique perhaps better than any other photographer today. Making the Special Edition prints is an assignment that Mr. Ross has been doing since the mid-1970's, with Ansels vision and standards always in mind. This print was made directly from Ansels negatives and in the traditional way: in a wet darkroom with amber safe lights, chemicals and running water. The print is a silver-gelatin print, meaning that the image-forming element is literally metallic silver. Living in Santa Fe, Alan Ross continues to be the exclusive printer of the Yosemite Special Edition negatives, an assignment Adams selected him for personally in 1975.

He makes each print by hand. In his autobiography, Ansel said. Alan was my photographic assistant from 1974 until 1979, and he continues to make the Special Edition prints with sensitivity. He knows those negatives thoroughly and interprets them as closely as possible to my original fine prints of those images.

This print is framed with a silver metal frame. The mat has a brown mark at the top (see picture) and there is a slight dent on the left side (see picture). I hesitate to re-frame this as I believe this was originally framed in the 1970's. I do not have a Certificate of Authenticity, however, I would definitely include my emails to and from Alan Ross to verify the listing details above. This truly is a great find for someone who appreciates the beauty in Adams' work!
