This evocative oil on canvas (laid to conservation panel) captures the moody glow of sunlight through threatening storm clouds on a typical California farmstead/ranch with cattle and horses? In rich tones of green, gold and blue and measures 26 x 23 ½ framed; 17 x 14 ¾ actual. It is signed and indistinctly dated W Keith lower right. Known as the Dean of California Painters, Keith's work influenced many of the painters working in this region for decades.
This smaller format work in the Tonalist manner is typical of his northern California pieces after 1885. The painting has been cleaned and transferred to a non-warping fiber panel back in the 1970s. There is some evidence of light skinning and inpaint in the sky and the overall finish is quite shiny. The work is stable with evidence of stabilized craquelure.
Intriguingly, they chose to retain the original massive gilt gesso and wood frame with 3 ½ wide x 4 deep moldingthey just 70s-ed it with a coat of green paint and a new silver finished inner frame.
