Canyon de Chelly Navaho Vintage Goldtone
Curtis Title: Canyon de Chelly - Navaho Medium: Goldtone Negative Date: 1904 Print Date: ca. It is located in Northeastern Arizona in the heart of Navaho country. Of Curtis 50,000 negatives this is widely considered to be his single most important and powerful landscape. The importance of nature, relative to the humanity in Native culture is clearly illustrated by the sheer size of the 1000 ft. Cliffs which dwarf the riders in the foreground. Canyon de Chelly was clearly one of Curtis favorite and most iconic images as he printed it in at least four different photographic processes. A Goldtone, or Orotone, is an extremely rare form of photographic printing that creates a photographic, gelatin silver image on glass with a golden metallic backing applied to the emulsion side. The process was popularized by Edward S. Curtis, who was its primary practitioner, 100 years ago. Because of the unparalleled luminosity and 3-dimensionality that is inherent in the process, it was Curtis' most favored way of creating his photographic images. Condition The overall condition of the goldtone, i. The glass surface, emulsion & gold backing is very good.
There are very slight, scattered surface scratches on the glass, which are visible only upon close inspection in direct reflected light. The are minor to moderate scattered areas, in the sky and cliff shadows, of historic retouching in both the emulsion and the gold backing.
These areas are visible under normal viewing circumstances and can change depending upon the viewing angle. In addition, there is a somewhat uniform emulsion/backing anomaly in the sky that is only visible under direct reflected light or very intense light. The period frame is in overall fair condition. Provenance From a private collector that's family has owned for 60+ years.
